Almere (old Dutch for ‘great lake') is built on what was once the South Sea. It is the fastest growing new town in Europe. What was once water half a century ago, will in 2005 be home to more than 180 thousand people

Almere is made up of districts, distinguished by their own unique atmosphere and identity. Almere Stad, Almere Buiten and Almere Haven have
already been developed. Forthcoming districts are: Almere Poort, Almere Hout and Almere Pampus.
 
Almere is a great community to live in due to the many recreational possibilities available just outside the front door. It is rich in nature and
water, which flows deep into the heart of the city. Thanks to its many bicycle paths, Almere is ideal for cyclists, rollerbladers and joggers.
Almere has ten beaches designed with leisure in mind. Some of these beaches are in the middle of the city.
In the forestry area of Almeerderhout is the country estate of De Kemphaan, complete with monkey sanctuaries run by the AAP Foundation.

With its open landscape, low horizon and Dutch skies Almere is an ideal place for landscape art. Almere contains two fine works of landscape art:
‘The Green Cathedral' and ‘Polderland Garden of love and fire'. Freestanding works of art can be found throughout the whole city, in the middle of the neighbourhood or in other unexpected locations. De Paviljoens Museum holds regular exhibitions of modern art from all over the world.
In Almere Haven (Almere Harbour) artists work under the name ‘Art at the canal'.
