Bolsward is one of the eleven Frisian Cities. Long ago Bolsward was only second to Leeuwarden in size. Now it is sixth in number of inhabitants (9700).
Bolsward originated from two "terps", artificial hills that were constructed by the inhabitants as a defense against the flooding by the sea.
In the year 900 the Bolsward area was surrounded by water , having an open connection to the sea by way of the Marne, a gully, and the Frisian Middle Sea.
One of the two "terps" lies at the northern side of the present city centre; the Martini Church was built there.
>From the early Middle Ages this height was connected to a second one which ran from the Zand by way of Hoogstraat to the Sneek gate, giving exit from Bolsward into the direction of the city of Sneek.
>From old written sources it appears that in 1412 Bolsward was one of the Germanic Hanze cities, so it had its commercial connections with northern Germany.
Since the 13th. century there had no more been an open connection with the sea.
Bolsward, however, remained important as aTransit and commercial port.
The many churches and monasteries within and without Bolsward also show that the city was important in history. The Broere Church, the church that lamentably was partially destroyed by fire in 1980 is one of the remnants of that time.
In 1455 Bolsward procured her city caracter and within a short time it constructed its defensive walls and moats. Of these walls only Hoog Bolwerk (high bulwork) remains. There is nothing left of the five city gates. Within the boundaries of the city canal, however, Bolsward has withstood the wear and tear of time very well. The many gables that have been preserved and that are wonderfully illuminated at night, the monuments and the city canals show that Bolsward has taken great care of its historical riches through the ages.
Till the present time Bolsward has had a central function in its region.
The many facilities make it to a city where one can live and stay to one's great satisfaction.
